Clinton High Football Red Devil Senior Zaravion “Zay” Johnson has been named as a defensive back for The Shrine Bowl of the Carolinas.

The Shrine Bowl of the Carolinas announced this week the 2023 rosters for the 87th edition of the All-Star game that pits the best senior high school football players in South Carolina against those in North Carolina.

The game will be Dec. 16 at Spartanburg High School.

Playing as wide receiver, in addition to defensive duties, for the Red Devils, Johnson had 84 yards on 3 catches, 1 TD (37 yards) and a longest catch of 46 yards in the win over Woodruff; 46 yards receiving as part of a 424-yard offensive attack in the loss to Chapman; 44 yards receiving and a TD, 20 yard punt return, and 91 yards and a TD in kick return yardage in the win over Aiken; 35 yards receiving in the win over Newberry; and a 44-yard kick return in the win over Laurens.

The Shrine Bowl says, “Tradition & Purpose, The Shrine Bowl of the Carolinas recognizes the very best in High School football players in the Carolinas. Every year there is a highly visible game between North Carolina’s players and those from South Carolina hosted by and promoted by The Shriners. Many players study with teammates who have been previously considered to be competitors, now sharing skills once deemed to be private.”

Shriners Children's Greenville says, “Located on Greenville Memorial Medical Campus, our experienced team brings hope and healing. We're driven to make lives richer, easier and less complex for children and families in South Carolina and beyond.

“At Shriners Children’s, we are committed to reaching as many children as possible, wherever they may live, and offering them our unique, patient-centered, wrap-around care.

“For most of its history, our health care system has been known as Shriners Hospitals for Children. As we adapt to current national trends in health care, especially the emphasis on outpatient care, and some locations become clinics or outpatient centers, we have introduced the phrase “Shriners Children’s.” It is shorter and more definitive – clearly stating who we are and what we care about. We are Shriners, and our commitment is to Children. In today’s fast-paced world, this short phrase helps to succinctly and clearly define us.

“Since opening our first hospital in 1922, we have been devoted to providing high-quality specialty medical care to the children and families who come to us, regardless of their ability to pay or insurance status. A century later, our commitment hasn’t changed — only expanded.

“Our three-part mission has one goal: to change and improve lives. We do this by caring for our patients, researching to gain knowledge and develop new treatments, and providing educational opportunities for physicians and other healthcare professionals.
