Dismantling the school record books for a national top-ten team finish last spring, the Presbyterian College women’s wrestling squad has completed preseason scheduling duties and has officially unveiled its 2023-24 path.

Announced on Thursday morning by recently-promoted head coach Brian Vutianitis, the Blue Hose will kick off their fifth season on November 5 with ultra-high expectations following 191 total wins and 30 top-three tournament finishes last season.

“We’re very excited for what lies ahead this season”, commented Vutianitis, who oversaw a program that took a giant leap while staying inside the nation’s top 15 for the entirety of last year. “There is a great mix of high-level duals and opportunities for our young team to promote themselves and gain experience as we continue to build the future of our sport and our brand.”

“This group of women is ready to make some noise, and November 5 will only be the beginning.”

NOVEMBER

Posting a ninth-place countrywide mark (a six-spot jump from the previous year), Presbyterian and their predominantly young roster will head north to the Princeton Open for the campaign’s opening bracket, one of only five tourneys with more favor toward standard duals incoming.

At the same event that began the 2022-23 slate, PC dominated the rest of the field in New Jersey by hauling in a trio of 1st-place trophies and two other top-four standings.

One week after screwing off the lid to another season, coach Vutianitis’ club will travel to the Midwest for a quad-dual against the likes of Lindenwood, Sacred Heart, and the hosting Iowa Hawkeyes.

Presbyterian will clock in for their home debut on November 19 with a similar multi-team scramble, welcoming Life University, Allen University, and Marymount to Templeton Gymnasium. PC will remain home for the next bout on the calendar afterwards, a December 1 feature versus Bluefield State.

DECEMBER

Gaining a reputation as road warriors in that six straight contests will occur away from Clinton, the Blue Hose will hit the mats again on December 9 in a two-for-one special against Huntingdon College and Brewton-Parker.

Less than a week later lies a visit to Emory & Henry for the Wasp Open, which sets up PC for the vaunted Midlands Championships on December 30, perhaps the most acclaimed midseason tournament that the sport has to offer.

Presby accounted for 12 victories and three bronze medals at the Chicago-based bracket last year, transitioning to the NWCA National Duals in early January once their Windy City trip has wrapped up.

The Blue Hose defeated three top-20 opponents at the National Duals setting in Louisville during their prior visit, with Iowa being the backdrop this time around in the early stages of 2024.

JANUARY

King and Campbellsville will host Vutianitis’ crew in consecutive days on January 13 and 14, ending the group’s lengthy road stretch that spans well over a full month. PC will close out their Templeton schedule on January 19, partaking in Senior Day versus Emory & Henry.

With at least 12 duals on tap – and possibly more depending on the results in Iowa – the Blue Hose will put a bow on the regular season with tournament submissions to the Emmanuel Open on January 21 and the Frostburg Open two weeks later.

FEBRUARY + POSTSEASON

That’s when the NCWWC Regional Championships will appear, taking place on February 23 in Powder Springs, Georgia. Presbyterian qualified six competitors for Nationals at the same event last spring, spreading out 15 wins in total.

A third visit to Iowa will be in the cards for those who claim enough W’s in the Regional tourney, representing the end of the road on March 10. Vutianitis directed three All-Americans at the National Championships seven months ago, including then-freshman Paige Wehrmeister who published a ridiculous record of 38-5 on the year.

Six grapplers return to the fold for Presbyterian in 2023-24, while the program brings in 10 new faces for their top-10 encore.
